AC condenser pads may not be among today’s top HVAC technology trends, but for homeowners who own an air conditioner with a freestanding outdoor unit, it’s a must-have. In today’s post, McLay Services, Inc. shares a quick guide to AC condenser pads and explains why you need them.
What Is an AC Condenser Pad?
Air conditioners with a separate outdoor unit produce enough vibration that, if set on soil, they’ll sink into the ground. An AC condenser pad is a platform that provides a flat, stable surface for the outdoor condenser unit. It also helps attenuate the noise that comes from the unit when it’s in operation.
How to Choose the Right AC Condenser Pad
Getting an AC condenser pad isn’t as simple as pouring concrete or installing boards for the condenser units to sit upon. Fortunately, though, it’s also not as complex as getting a new surge protector for your AC unit. The following are some of the factors to consider when getting an AC condenser pad:
Size — Measure the footprint of the condenser unit, then choose an AC condenser pad that exceeds the unit footprint at all sides by several inches. Some areas may have zoning codes that dictate the size and height of the pad. If your home utilizes two condenser units located in the same spot, make sure there’s ample space between both units to allow for airflow.
Location — Try to find a spot where the air conditioner won’t be exposed to the elements very much. Most air conditioners are designed to withstand being rained on or a few hours in direct sunlight. However, the pad might not be, depending on the material. A shady area can help prolong the service lives of both the condenser unit and the pad that it sits on.
Material — AC condenser pads are made from various materials. Some pads are concrete, and are usually used for large-capacity air conditioners, but they do tend to sink into the ground over time. Plastic AC condenser pads are more sustainable, waterproof and offer resistance to UV radiation and extreme heat.
