Cloudy tap water, which can also be described as “milky” or “murky”, can be concerning, especially if you don’t know what’s causing it. There are several possible reasons why your tap water is cloudy. In today’s article, trusted plumbing and HVAC contractor McLay Services, Inc. discusses two of the usual culprits behind cloudy tap water and what you can do about it.
Air Bubbles
Typically, excess air bubbles can get into your faucet water if you’ve recently had some plumbing work done, or if there’s trapped air or increased water pressure in your plumbing system. To determine if you’re dealing with excess air bubbles, fill up a glass of water, let it sit for a few minutes and see if the water clears from the bottom up. Air bubbles are completely harmless, but if they’re starting to become a nuisance, you can ask your plumber for possible solutions.
Hard Water
Hard water has a high amount of dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium, and this could be the reason why your tap water is cloudy. You’ll know that your faucet water is hard if:
- The water in the glass never clears
- There are white spots on your glass dishes after washing them
- There’s white or discolored mineral deposit buildup on your water appliances
Much like air conditioning repair, plumbing solutions will only work if the cause is correctly identified. Make sure to consult your trusted plumber to confirm if you have hard water.
Typically, hard water can be eliminated by installing a reverse osmosis filtration system. This type of system can remove the excess minerals in your water and make your tap water less cloudy. It can also get rid of harmful chemicals and bacteria that may have found their way into your water.
